American writer Gene Lees described their characteristic sound as ‘one that will not go away’. Once heard, never forgotten in other words, and especially true for those who grew up with the idea that the best kind of fun came from dancing to the beat of a big band. The extraordinary popularity of social dancing prompted the formation of a great many travelling orchestras, some linked to a lushly romantic style, others committed to altogether hotter rhythms. There were dance halls on every corner and minor musical masterpieces were turned out by the score, all designed to tap into the upbeat mood of post-Depression America. While it was entirely possible for these bands to survive and achieve success without ever entering the studios, it is unarguable that major reputations were built (and sustained) through recordings. Twenty-three of these top-rated groups are represented here. Some of them stayed around for decades, others were short-lived; some were led by fine instrumentalists, black and white, and a few by artists who are active still. Although the basic format doesn’t differ much – big bands usually include trumpets, trombones, saxes and a rhythm section – these selections clearly show the stylistic diversity of the idiom. Each offers unique variations of ensemble balance and texture; soloists are recognisably individual. Who said big bands all sound the same?

Glenn Miller and his Orchestra performing "In The Mood", released originally in 1941. "In The Mood" is one of the best-known musical themes of the 1940s and one of the big band era's most recognizable songs. The song was the biggest hit of 1940 WHC and of Miller's career. The song went through several others' hands before it ended up with Miller. This song was based on a song called "Tar Paper Stomp" which was recorded in 1930 by Joseph "Wingy" Manone, who was a bandleader from New Orleans. This song was written by the Tin Pan Alley composers Joe Garland (music) and Andy Razaf (lyrics). "In The Mood" is an expression that indicates a desire to have sex. It was pretty innocent at the time, but a little racy. Miller recorded it in 1939, and the song became wildly popular in early 1940, shortly before Billboard began publishing its "Music Popularity Chart." This makes it hard to gauge the song's appeal at the time, but it helped Miller become the top bandleader in the world - in that first Billboard chart, he held down three of the Top 10 places. Glenn Miller was an American big band trombonist, arranger, composer, and bandleader. He was the best-selling recording artist from 1939 to 1943, leading one of the best-known big bands. Miller's notable recordings include "Moonlight Serenade," "In the Mood," "Tuxedo Junction," "Chattanooga Choo Choo," "A String of Pearls," "At Last," "(I've Got a Gal In) Kalamazoo," "American Patrol," and "Little Brown Jug." "In The Mood" is a well-known and iconic song from the big band era, and the biggest hit of Glenn Miller's career. Miller was one of the most successful bandleaders of his time, and his recordings continue to be popular today. Swing music, also known as swing jazz or simply swing, is a form of jazz music that developed in the early 1930s and became a distinctive style by 1935 in the United States. Swing uses a strong rhythm section of double bass and drums as the anchor for a lead section of brass instruments such as trumpets and trombones, woodwinds including saxophones and clarinets, and sometimes stringed instruments such as violin and guitar, medium to fast tempos, and a "lilting" swing time rhythm. Swing bands usually featured soloists who would improvise on the melody over the arrangement. The danceable swing style of bandleaders such as Benny Goodman and Count Basie was the dominant form of American popular music from 1935 to 1945. The verb "to swing" is also used as a term of praise for playing that has a strong rhythmic "groove" or drive. (extract from Wikipedia 2011)

For any issues, please get in touch with Past Perfect or The Orchard first. There can only be a handful of people in the Western world who haven’t heard of Glenn Miller and his music. His orchestra existed for only five years yet it made an indelible mark on the history of popular music, changing and modernising dance music styles almost overnight. Along with his contemporaries, Benny Goodman, the Dorsey Brothers, Artie Shaw and others, he was a driving force and combined swing with out and out dance music which kept the publics attention, not only in those five short years which saw the outbreak of World War II, but ever since. Glenn Miller collectors will always point out that the ten or so bestsellers, most of them instrumentals, are just scratching the surface of Millers output of over 300 sides for RCA in the States, and this collection covers not only the most well known and perhaps best loved titles that Glenn made his own, but also a goodly selection of the rest. Miller’s famous theme, Moonlight Serenade, performs its usual task of getting things under way. No surprise that this record is one of the five most requested discs on record programmes in this country and surely the most imitated record by other bands down the years. Recorded in April 1939 and just six days before that other favourite, Little Brown Jug, Millers theme puts us all in the mood for what follows.

In the mid-1930s, Goodman led one of the most popular musical groups in the United States. His concert at Carnegie Hall in New York City on January 16, 1938 is described by critic Bruce Eder as "the single most important jazz or popular music concert in history: jazz's 'coming out' party to the world of 'respectable' music. Goodman's bands started the careers of many jazz musicians. During an era of racial segregation, he led one of the first integrated jazz groups. He performed nearly to the end of his life while exploring an interest in classical music. #bennygoodman #singsingsing #swing
Line up: Buddy Rich (Drums) Tom Warrington (Bass guitar) Bob Kaye (Piano) John Marshall, Mike McGovern, Mark Ohlsen, Chuck Schmidt (Trumpets) Dale Kirkland, Glenn Franke, George Moran (Trombones) Steve Marcus, Gary Pribeck, Chuck Wilson, Andy Fusco, Greg Smith (Saxes) Bernard "Buddy" Rich (September 30, 1917 – April 2, 1987) was an American jazz drummer and bandleader. Rich was billed as "the world's greatest drummer" and was known for his virtuosic technique, power, groove, and speed. Rich was born in Manhattan, New York, to Jewish vaudevillians Bess (Skolnik) and Robert Rich.:6 His talent for rhythm was first noted by his father, who saw that Buddy could keep a steady beat with spoons at the age of one. He began playing drums in vaudeville when he was 18 months old, billed as "Traps the Drum Wonder." At the peak of Rich's childhood career, he was reportedly the second-highest paid child entertainer in the world (after Jackie Coogan). At 11 he was performing as a bandleader. He received no formal drum instruction, and went so far as to claim that instruction would only degrade his musical talent. He also never admitted to practicing, claiming to play the drums only during performances and was not known to read music. He expressed great admiration for, and was influenced by, the playing of Chick Webb, Gene Krupa, Dave Tough, and Jo Jones, among others. Rich first played jazz w ith a major group in 1937 with Joe Marsala and guitarist Jack Lemaire. He then played with Bunny Berigan (1938) and Artie Shaw (1939), and even instructed a 14-year-old Mel Brooks in drumming for a short period when playing for Shaw. At 21, Rich participated in his first major recording with the Vic Schoen Orchestra (the band that backed the Andrews Sisters). In 1938, he was also hired to play in Tommy Dorsey's orchestra where he met and performed with Frank Sinatra. In 1942, Rich left the Dorsey band to join the United States Marine Corps. He rejoined the Dorsey group after leaving the Marines two years later. In 1946, Rich formed his own band with financial support from Sinatra, and continued to lead different groups on and off until the early fifties. The Buddy Rich Big Band in the 1940s In addition to Tommy Dorsey (1939–42, 1945, 1954–55), Rich also played with Benny Carter (1942), Harry James (1953-56–62, 1964, 1965), Les Brown, Charlie Ventura, and Jazz at the Philharmonic, as well as leading his own band and performing with all-star groups. In the early fifties Rich played with Dorsey and began to perform with trumpeter Harry James, an association which lasted until 1966. In 1966, Rich left James to develop a new big band. For most of the period from 1966 until his death, he led successful big bands in an era when the popularity of big bands had waned from their 1930s and 1940s peak. In this later period, Rich continued to play clubs and stated in multiple interviews that the great majority of his big band's performances were at high schools, colleges and universities, with club performances done to a much lesser degree. Rich also served as the session drummer for many recordings, where his playing was often much more understated than in his own big-band performances. Especially notable were Rich's sessions for the late-career comeback recordings of Ella Fitzgerald and Louis Armstrong, on which he worked with pianist Oscar Peterson and his famous trio featuring bassist Ray Brown and guitarist Herb Ellis. Richard Bona built his first bass himself from crates and bicycle brake ropes. A French jazz club owner in Douala had played recordings of Jaco Pastorius to the thirteen-year-old Richard and thus pointed the way. Otherwise the Cameroonian might have become famous only as a singer. With his feathery falsetto singing, in which the West African Griot tradition is suspended, he is still enchanting. But it is his astonishing virtuosity on the electric bass that first paved Bona's way into the bands of Salif Keita and Manu Dibangu and finally into those of jazz fusion greats like Pat Metheny, Michael Brecker or Joe Zawinul. Richard Bona has long been a star himself and is now playing together the hr big band with his own music. deutsch: Afrikanische Grooves, virtuose Basslinien und federleichter Gesang in der Tradition westafrikanischer Griots: Richard Bona verwebt diese Zutaten zu einer Musik für Kopf, Herz und Füße. 🤍hr-bigband.de hr-Bigband: trumpets: Frank Wellert, Thomas Vogel, Martin Auer, Axel Schlösser saxophones: Heinz-Dieter Sauerborn, Oliver Leicht, Tony Lakatos, Steffen Weber, Rainer Heute trombones: Günter Bollmann, Simon Harrer, Jürgen Neudert, Manfred Honetschläger piano: Peter Reiter guitar: Martin Scales drums: Jean Paul Höchstädter percussion: Marcio Doctor #richardbona #bassplayer #bigband Credits: Olaf Stötzler, manager Frankfurt Radio Bigband Lucia Rosu, executive producer Robin Bös, sound-engineer Rainer Schwarz, sound-engineer cameras: Sven Bader, Jens Benner, Julia Gnann, David Elias Kar recording manager: Sabine Wiesner techn. production: Uwe Tapken live-streaming: Jürgen Hanssum project coordinator: Matthias Hohn executive producer video: Nikolas Pieper production manager: Hartmuth Niemczik producer: Manuel Meyer A production of Hessischer Rundfunk

This is a big one for most Big Bands. Most know only the main chorus, but I've always wanted to do the full song so everyone can learn the longer version.

ONE MINUTE BYTES PLAYLIST: 🤍 The 8-Bit Big Band "One Minute Bytes" #20 - "Creative Exercise" from Mario Paint (SNES). This song has become a favorite of YouTube gamers to underscore funny moments in their uploads. It's an incredible Trad Jazz theme from a beloved release. I truly love Mario Paint so much. It was my first introduction to music software with it's built in composer function, and it came with a mouse?? For your TV?? Truly a mind blowing piece of creative software at the time. Here's how it would sound if it were the end credits theme for a mid century TV sitcom :) One Minute Bytes is our series of short videos dedicated to melodies and themes from within video games that deserve to be arranged even if they might not be the main theme of said game. He's almost here: Big Band, Skullgirls Encore's first male character, arrives free next Tuesday, April 22nd! Once a regular beat cop known as Ben Birdland, he fell flat when he got on the wrong side of New Meridian's corrupt police force. Birdland was broken and bent out of shape by his former colleagues, but was tuned up by Dr. Avian and ASG Lab 8. Now he is armed with a full ensemble of pneumatic weaponry, transforming him into the full fortissimo instrument of justice: "Big Band."
