Even Microsoft Uses Linux, So Why Don't We??

I’m sure you’ve all heard of Linux. It’s that one open-source operating system that nerds love talking about. But, Linux isn’t just meant for nerds. In fact, virtually all of the largest tech companies in the world use Linux in one form or other thanks to its superior performance when it comes to back-end development. In fact, even Microsoft has switched over from Windows to Linux for their networks, databases, and cloud infrastructure. But, if Linux is so good, why hasn’t the average person even tried it, especially when it's free? Well, one of the main reasons that Linux never gained that much popularity is because its low cost doesn’t really mean much to the vast majority of customers. The vast majority of people just be prebuilt machines and Windows/macOS comes preinstalled for no extra cost. Also, even if you were building your own PC, Microsoft has made it extremely easy to get an unlicensed version of Windows running permanently. On top of this, Linux is usually not as user-friendly because it doesn’t come preinstalled with much software. Not to mention, you often have to use the command line to accomplish simple tasks. This video explains the top reasons that Linux is not very popular despite its free nature and apparent superiority. What the OS will collect is the following: - Microsoft Store Logs - Network data - Hardware information - Accessory data - Application-related data - Event metrics You'll also send complete words that you typed or wrote, not just statistics. You'll also send speech recognition data, and activity history, so every document you opened, website you visited... But that's just what Microsoft tells you about. Recently, a youtuber called "The PC Security channel" analysed a completely fresh Windows install, using Wireshark, and what they found was is that Windows makes a few connections to third parties it never really told you about. THEIR VIDEO: 🤍 - - - Bing and - So what exactly can Microsoft do with all this data? Well, they have more than enough to completely fingerprint your device, they can reliably tell what you use in terms of apps, and what type of content you watch, and they also basically can have a keylogger on your computer. And finally, Windows sends some data to third parties. Fortunately, you can disable all the option stuff straight from the settings. You can go to the privacy and security options, and go into each category and disable everything there. You can also completely disable the telemetry service. Just hit Windows + R, and in the run dialog, type services.msc. In there, look for something called "Connected user experiences and telemetry", double click that, and in the "General tab", you can set "startup type" to "disabled". Apple talks a big game when it comes to privacy, but in the end, is it really true? Out of the box, macOS sends to Apple your IP address, location, and some usage patterns, like all the apps you run, and when you run them. Other telemetry data, out of the box, includes browsing history, search history, crash data, performance and diagnostic data, location information, health information if you use that on an iPhone for example, all the info you entered in your AppleID, the device serial number, payment information, everything you bought using that Apple ID, and potentially your government ID. Fortunately, macOS lets you disable virtually everything that's being collected. You can just head over to the Security and Privacy settings, and in analytics and improvements, uncheck everything. Now, how about Linux? Well, Linux based operating systems, or at least desktop Linux distributions don't collect any data out of the box, with a few exceptions. The first one is Ubuntu, who will collect telemetry data out of the box, with no personal information at all. It's just hardware data, but it could still be used to fingerprint your device. Canonical doesn't currently have any ad server that I know about, so they probably only really use this to know what their users actually use and focus their efforts on that, but if you're uncomfortable with that, you can disable it at install. Some Ubuntu derivatives that use the same installer might also have that kind of telemetry. On top of that, you have the ability to turn some entirely optional telemetry on in KDE's settings; and GNOME also has a telemetry tool that you have to install manually.

Windows & macOS can't do this, but Linux can!

Since the drivers for all the hardware Linux supports are in the kernel, you don't depend on what the manufacturer has preinstalled on your computer, and you don't have anything to install either when you move your disk to another PC. The second thing is the ability to replace parts of your operating system with others, that fit your needs better. Windows and macOS are one size fits all operating systems; they're designed to provide a good enough experience for everyone. On Linux, you can pick a distro that fits your needs out of the box, or you can replace components. Get a other file manager, get a different window manager, change the init system... Third, we have the live USB, or Live CD. This is something only Linux based operating systems do. You slap a reasonably sized ISO onto a reasonably sized USB drive, and you boot from it, and you get a fully usable system. Not only can you try before you install, which is crucial when you're deciding what will run on your PC, but you can also have a distro that ONLY runs through a Live USB, like Tails, which means your whole system is in your pocket, and you can boot from it from any computer you want. Have you tried running Windows on a 10 year old computer? Or even older? The latest, still supported version of Windows? Good luck, without spending time building a custom ISO to debloat the OS, and crossing your fingers for drivers to exist for your old hardware and that specific version of Windows. On a Mac, it's even less doable, the latest version of macOS supports at most the mac pro from 2013, and that was a very powerful, expensive device when it released. On Linux? No problem, pick a distro that's lightweight, and enjoy your old computer like it was new. You'll get patches, security fixes, the very latest applications if you want them, but your system will run fine. If what you want is an OS that occupies the least amount of space possible? You also can. Fifth thing you can do on Linux but not on Windows or macOS? Driverless printer support. On Linux, printers are detected automatically, and work out of the box. No driver CD to try and fit in your computer that doesn't have a CD drive anymore, no need to download anything from the internet. You plug it in, and you print. Next is UI and UX customization. Windows and macOS can't be customized visually. Not out of the box, not more than light or dark theme, and an accent color. If you want to change the icons, the general theme, the layout of the desktop, you can't. With Linux, all major desktop environments let you change how your system looks or works. Yes, even GNOME. With extensions, and themes, you can have a radically different experience than the default. Next, is no vendor Lock-in. On Linux, you're free to move to anything else. Once your distro is end of life, and won't receive any patches, you can upgrade for free to the next version, or, if you don't like that new version, you can also just decide to change distributions entirely. On Linux, you could even BUY extended support to keep a distro alive and patched even when the distro's developer have abandoned it.

It has a 1440p screen that I'll run at 60hz. In terms of operating systems, I'll run default windows 11 with all of its updates and the nvidia game ready drivers, and the latest Ubuntu 22.10 with the proprietary nvidia drivers, on X11, and no other specific customization to the default. Ubuntu uses up 25 gigs. On Windows, the install uses 29 Gigs. Ubuntu's System Monitor reports 1.9 gigs of RAM used after a cold boot. On Windows, the system reports 3.3 Gigs of RAM being used, after a fresh boot. Although it does report 4.7 Gigs of RAM being cached, which should represent that preemptive memory usage, while Ubuntu reported about 3.9 gigs of cached RAM. If we add used RAM and cached RAM, Ubuntu uses around 5.8 Gigs, where Windows uses 8 Gigs. I used Kdiskmark on Ubuntu, which reported read speeds of 3360 MBps, and write speeds of 2706. On Windows, I used Crystal Disk Mark, and got read speeds of 3505 MBps, and write speeds of 2782 MBps. I ran a speedtest both in Wifi and plugged in using ethernet. Using Wifi, Windows 11 got a download speed of 108 Mbps and an upload speed of 196 Mbps. On Ubuntu, the same speedtest over wifi got 154 Mbps for download speed, and 201 for upload. Using ethernet, Windows got 512 Mbps down, and 483 Mbps up. Ubuntu, plugged with the same cable, got 508 Mbps down, and only 123 Mbps up. On to the CPU benchmarks, namely Geekbench 6. On Windows, it gave me a score of 2216 in single core, and 10805 in multi core. On Ubuntu, the same geekbench 6 got scores of 2494 in single core, and 10138 in multi core. We're going to run Unigine heaven on both operating systems, at High settings, in fullscreen, at the native 2560x1440p resolution, with tesselation and anti aliasing disabled. On Ubuntu, I got 114 FPS average, with a score of 2878, minimum FPS was around 20, and max at around 202. On WIndows, running the same benchmark using openGL with the exact same settings, I got 105 FPS average, with a score of 2665, 7.5% lower, and a minimum FPS of 14, and max of 219. Running the same benchmark using DirectX 11 on Windows resulted in better performance, with an average of 139FPS, and a score of 3513, but minimum FPS dropping even lower at 10, and much higher max FPS as well, at 283. For Shadow of the Tomb raider, running the in game benchmark at high details, at the native resolution, I got 80 FPS on average on Ubuntu. On windows, I got an average of 87 FPS, with more stable frame times. Horizon doesn't have an in game benchmark, but playing the same sequence of fighting this thunderjaw, with the game running at the native 1440p resolution, at high settings, with an uncapped framerate, I got a little less than 60 FPS on Ubuntu. It mostly stayed at around 55 FPS for the whole fight. On Windows, using the exact same settings, and playing the same fight, I got more around 65 to 70 FPS. Although for some reason the game didn't have any audio, not that I would have heard it over the fan noise that went into overdrive on Windows. Now, for battery life, I used Firefox on both operating systems, and played youtube videos in a loop until the battery died, over wifi, at mid brightness, in battery saving mode, with nothing else running in the background and Both devices running in hybrid graphics mode. On Ubuntu, the laptop lasted for 6 Hours and 52 minutes before it died, a little bit lower than what I got when using it with Fedora when I reviewed it. On Windows, it only endured for 5 hours and 36 minutes.

First, the green accent color is gone. It's now a very usual blue. Gone are the colored folders, now they're your basic manilla yellow color, with a stripe on top of them to use your favorite accent color. Even window controls have changed icons. You can still use the older themes, that they call "legacy". That default look is also complimented by a new cursor theme called Bibata. Sounds received an update as well, and are now using Material design v2 sounds. The second big change in Mint 21.1 is its Flatpak support. The update manager now supports flatpak applications and runtimes. Mint's Software Manager also gets the usual dropdown menu to let you pick between the flatpak package or the regular deb package from the repos. Mint uses Flathub by the way, so you should get everything you need from there. It's really not perfect though, as searches will return multiple instances of the same application. Another change is the way Mint handles drivers. First, the driver manager, the tool that lets you see if there ARE drivers you could install and install them, well that now runs in user mode, so you don't need to enter your password just to open the application. If you're offline, you'll also get a dedicated screen to let you know why the app is empty, and you can also now use USB drives to install drivers, for example if you plug in a live USB, Mint will be able to detect it, and offer to mount it so you can install drivers from that. Cinnamon 5.6 comes with a new corner bar, which is another callback to window's default layout: it's a small vertical applet, stuck to the far right of the default panel. Hovering over it allows you to peek at the desktop by hiding all windows, complete with a blur effect if you want, but you can also click that corner bar with the left mouse button, or the middle mouse button, and configure what which click does, between either showing the desktop, showing the desklets, showing the workspace selector or showing the window selector. In the context menu when right clicking on the desktop, you can also now directly access the display settings, and the default desktop icons were cleaned up, with the removal of the home folder, Computer, Trash, and Network. Nemo, the file manager, also gets a few changes, like showing the dates in list view in a monospace font, improving the path bar, by letting you click on the current path to toggle the location URL bar, while navigating to a different folder will bring the path bar back. Smaller changes include a search entry in the shortcuts settings so you can look at all the various shortcuts you might want to change, preferred applications are now featured by categories, you can configure the duration for which notifications will stay visible, the themes list is now sorted between dark and light themes, and current and legacy themes, and you also get window placement mode back in the window manager. Oh and also, Mint won't bug you for your password as often as it once did. For example, uninstalling a flatpak app that you installed for your user and not the whole system won't require a passsword. Same goes for removing local shortcuts and local applications you only installed for yourself. And Synaptic and the Update manager will also remember if you entered your password recently, so they won't ask for it for every single action.c
